Random Contours

Close up view of a contoured plywood surface.

The inspiration and idea

Sometimes when you see something cool you really want to recreate it your own style. I remember seeing a decorative wall for the interior of a building, kind of like the image below. What you see below can be interpreted as random noise, where the height of the contour is just set randomly. Although that’s not strictly true, since there is actually a lot of smoothing or averaging between random height points, which creates this nice flowing and rippled look.

A wall with a contoured surface created from random noise.

The result

I created some smoothed random noise and experimented with a number of factors, such as: how the noise is generated and smoothed, the depth of “ripples”, and the type of plywood used to create the contours. I settled on something I like, which is what you see below. A contoured plywood surface in a timber frame.

Interested?

If you like this framed noise and would like one for yourself, I’m happy to create it for you! You can purchase it at my etsy store, you may also be interested in something else I sell at my store. If you decide to purchase something from me or share any of my work, thank you. It’s really encouraging and helps me to continue creating. Finally, if you’ve seen something on my site that I don’t sell at my store, I’m happy to make it for you. Just get in contact with me, and I can organise a custom etsy item you can purchase.
