A Lamp with Curves
The inspiration and idea
I can’t describe where the inspiration for this lamp came from; I knew I needed to make a lamp base for someone, and I had a vague thought about a curving twisting shape that I decided to work with. After some time sketching, what you see below is the shape that I turned from foggy thoughts to clear geometry.
The result
Once I had the shape figured out, there were a number of technical challenges to solve and some trials before I figured out a suitable method to create the lamp bases. I’m happy with the outcome, and enjoy how this piece is so different to a lot of woodworking in that there are no 90 degree angles and straight lines, or the symmetry that comes from lathe work.

I thought about hiding most of the lamp fitting by recessing it into the timber, but I prefer it protuding as it allows more of the shape to be seen when using a lamp shade, which also hides the fitting anyway.
